Canvas Observer Information for Parents |

A Canvas Observer account gives parents and guardians a "view-only" look at their child's schoolwork, grades, and teacher updates without changing or turning in any assignments.

Can I check assignment due dates and grades?Â
Yes. Clicking on the Grades tab for the selected course lets you see assignment names and due dates. Article instructions link: Finding Assignment Grades in Canvas.
Can I send direct messages to my child’s teachers?
Yes. You can use the built-in Canvas Inbox to send private messages to any instructor in your child's classes.
Which phone app should we download?
Parents & Students should download the GCA app. Download instructions link: GCA App Use.
How do I set up notifications for changes in Canvas?
- In Canvas Parent, turn on notifications to stay informed about your student’s coursework. You can receive email alerts** for assignment due date changes, new and updated calendar events, Canvas messages, and grading updates. How do I link multiple children to my parent account?
Have your child sign into Canvas, go to Account > Settings, and click Pair with Observer to get a 6-character code.
Sign into your parent account, go to Account > Observing, type the code, and click + Student.
Can parents submit work or take quizzes for a student?
No. All work must be submitted through the student’s own Canvas account so the school has an accurate record.
Can I message my child inside Canvas?
No. Parents can only message teachers in Canvas. To talk to your child, use phone calls, texts, or personal email.
Why is my dashboard empty before school starts?
Class pages stay hidden until the teacher officially publishes the course on the first day of school.
**The email notifications in your inbox may contain links to resources in your student's Canvas course. Those links will only work if you are logged in to your Canvas Observer account in the same browser window where you are accessing your email inbox OR on the same smartphone device where you are accessing the email links.**
