Transfer Local Files from Chromebook to Google Drive |
Chromebooks use Google Drive for permanent file storage. Files saved directly to “Downloads” or “My files” are stored locally and may be deleted, especially after a system update or a powerwash (reset). To keep your files safe, always save them to Google Drive.
Follow these simple steps to make sure your important schoolwork is safely backed up to your Google Drive.
Open the Files App
- Click the circular Launcher icon (bottom-left of the screen).
Click the blue Files folder icon.
Access Your Google Drive (Destination)
- In the left sidebar, click the down arrow next to Google Drive (if needed) to expand the list.
Locate the My Drive folder. This is the main folder for your personal Google Drive storage.
Drag and Drop
- Find the files you want to save (usually in the Downloads folder) in the main window.
- Select Files: In the main window, click on the files or folders you want to save. To select multiple items, hold down the
Ctrlkey (orShiftfor a continuous list) while clicking. - Drag and Drop: Click and hold the selected items, and then drag them over to the My Drive folder in the left sidebar.
Your files will immediately upload and be safely stored in your Google Drive!
